All the characters in the film were based on compilations of several real people in my life. I would say the most accurate aspect of Ving Rhames' character (Conrad) was the effect that person had on my ability to interpret my environment, and understand the bigger picture moving around me outside of those concrete walls.

I struggled with that for a bit, knowing that a convicted murder was the closest thing to a voice of reason that I had in that place.

As for my mother. She still struggles to make ends meet. But she's strong, and I think Mary-Louise Parker's performance showed that. My relationship with my mother is much better now than it was at that point in time. Family is everything.
